Thank your chosen deity that the Red Wings aren't very good.  The Kings, amidst a few bright moments, played a rather lackluster game marred by mistakes and the seemingly never ending inability to finish.

For much of the first period, the Kings were dominant.  Everything seemed to click.  The breakout was smooth, fast and effective.  They possessed the puck in the zone.  The forecheck was working.  In fact the only thing that didn't look good, and I have to give them some credit for consistency in this instance, was the power play.  Then the chinks in the armor started to show.

Toward the end of the first period, the Kings gave up some scoring opportunities that were quite juicy.  Had Detroit been a bit more talented and Quick a bit less talented, the score could have been much different, despite the pitifully low number of shots against the Kings.  In the end, despite significantly outplaying the Wings, the Kings exited the period up 1-0.

Apparently, at this point, the Kings went into the locker room and passed the bong around.  The period began with mistake after mistake, and one ill-advised play after another.  The Wings couldn't help but attempt to feast on these issues, and not too long into the second, they did.

To be fair, the Kings righted the ship some, but overall the night was full of lackluster performances.  Lizotte, one of my favorite players on the team, and a player that has contributed significantly this season, did not have a good night.  Hutton also looked sub par.  Beyond that, the entire game seemed to be full of unremarkable hockey.  Until the end, of course.

Maybe I should have bought a lottery ticket last night.  Not only did the Kempe score last night, but he scored with under two minutes to play with the goaltender pulled to help send the game into overtime.  Then in overtime, something pretty special happened.  If you haven't watched it closely, please do.  I saw what you did Drew.  If it isn't, it should be one of the highlights of the year.  Thankfully, I went home happier than expected, and the Kings earned two more points that they desperately needed.

Happy or not, there is a long road ahead of us.  The power play would stink if it got considerably better, the team makes too many mental errors, and even proven finishers seem to have the Nick Shore syndrome (can't buy a goal).  At least the tickets would be cheap if the service fees didn't constitute 50% of the cost.  Does anyone know how to get Wisconsin Hockey on TV?
