Order the Kale.

Kale Clague is the real deal.  I'm sure that this year will be full of learning experiences and teachable moments for this young man, but last night, I was able to finally see him play in person.  I was impressed.

I was pleasantly, but not completely surprised.  I had seen numerous highlights, and been able to catch glimpses of his play in the World Junior Championships.  I had high hopes, but that can often make me more critical.  Mr. Clague did not disappoint.

He cruised around the ice effortlessly, creating time and space for himself and others.  His positioning seemed to be satisfactory, and his mistakes seemed to be few.  His passes seemed to be on point, hitting guys in stride much of the time.  Our breakout, which suffered in abysmal failure much of last year should benefit greatly from his mobility and skill.

He may not intimidate anyone with his size, but he is willing to scrap on the boards and demonstrated both the ability to be tenacious and skillful at winning pucks in physical situations.  He didn't back down, and while not crushing anyone, played physical enough not to get the job done.

I was extremely disappointed not to be able to see JAD and Durzi play. What I did get to see did not disappoint.  Albeit the preseason, everyone on that sheet of ice can skate.  However, some shine above the others.  Wagner has raw speed.  Kopi, well it is clear that opponents rarely bother to even try to take him off the puck these days.  Clague, among some talented players, stood out. He can really move around the ice with seemingly effortless strides.  He is definitely a special skater.

I feel safe in stating that Kale Clague, forever here after to be known as Salad, will likely prove himself to someday be an all star.  Who knows? Maybe in a couple of years, Soup (Campbell) and Salad will be fixtures at the all star game.
