Kuemper Saves
Halleluja!!! Praise Jevus, Praise Ollah, or whatever rock or celestial being that you choose. Darcy Kuemper is helping to save the Kings season. There have been many goaltender pairs that played a key role in getting teams to the Stanley cup. Moog and Fuhr, Resch and Smith, Vanbiesbrook and Richter, Murray and Fleury are all great examples. Luckily for Kings fans, Kuemper is playing Moog to Quick’s Fuhr.
In fifteen games, Kuemper is 8-1, with a goals against average of 1.75 and a .943 save percentage. He has given us an impressive stat line to be sure. However, as with most stats, they can be a bit misleading. He hasn’t had to face the number of tough consecutive games that Quick has, which means that he hasn’t been worn out, and worn down by having to make unbelievable save after unbelievable save to make up for the less than stellar defense in front of him. Quick on the other hand has been routinely shelled. Which is why Kuemper’s stellar play as of late has been so important.
The Kings have entered the part of the season where every game’s importance is magnified. They have left themselves in what realistically could be a seven team race for three spots (the last wildcard spot is still within reach). As such, the Kings can’t afford to drop any games. Having a strong backup to spell Quick is invaluable, and Kuemper has done a magnificent job, especially as of late.
He has played really solid, controlling rebounds, not giving up bad goals, with solid positioning and great reactions. He has stepped up and allowed the Kings to rest Quick, likely when he needed it the most. With one of the world’s best goal tenders, Quick, and a backup that is making a legitimate case to be a starter, and possibly a top ten goal tender, the kings have the net all squared away for the final stretch into the playoffs.
It would be nice if the goal tenders got a bit more defensive and offensive help though.
